The Villian, the Legend, DOOM.

It’s been a little over a month since the announcement of the late hip-hop legend MF DOOM’s passing.

DANIEL DUMILE aka: MF DOOM, Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah, Metal Face, Metal Fingers, The Villian, Zev Love X. Passed away on Halloween 2020.

The delayed announcement of the late rapper was nothing short of how mysterious DOOM was. It was confusing at first because his Instagram page and other social media handles were heavily promoting new merch, kind of keeping us wondering what was in store as far as upcoming endeavors go. Normally when an artist puts out merch its from a past project or an upcoming one, there was no way of pinpointing what the merch was for. We still don’t know what the cause of death is, it’s hard to say due to the pandemic.

Another interesting factor leading up to the announcement of DOOM’s death is that he never posted any pictures of his face with out the mask. In early August 2020 a post on his instagram was published of a mask-less Dumile with the one and only 2Pac, accompanied by Grand Puba (a legendary photo for real hip-hop heads).

After processing and analyzing other blogs across various forums I thought it was time I publish something that was more informative and insightful as to what made MF DOOM so legendary. Here are the top five reasons why MF DOOM was one of the BEST.

  1. Dangerdoom an album consisting of Danger Mouse and MF DOOM made for an insane collaborative project. At this point we couldn’t escape DOOM’s wrath of quality hip-hop because his music was being featured on Adult Swim, which was a huge deal. He always incorporated insane samples that would make one think “Damn I’ve heard this somewhere before”. With this album he was able to use samples, iconic voice overs, and material from Adult Swim (Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Aqua Teen Hunger Force). Honorable mentions include: Madlib, Ghost Face Killah, Black Thought, Talib Kweli, and Cee-Lo Green This was a win-win situation for the fans because we got to watch our favorite cartoons with MF DOOM intermission beats while also wondering when the album was going to drop. SUPERB MARKETING.

2. The Mask. That fucking mask was iconic, this kept his following intrigued and tied into his music. In his interview with Red Bull Academy he mentions that one of the uses of the mask was to help people focus more on the music rather than the human. Not a super hero, but a VILLIAN.

3. The lyrics were impeccable. With various references to his personal life, well-known cartoons, and his sense of comedy made for great content. His monotone voice made you take him seriously while trying to decipher what the hell he was talking about, sometimes not realizing what he’s talking about till after the third listen. His word play was insane, always spitting clever bars that can be interpreted in different ways. Some of the most iconic lyrics weren’t even lyrics, making popping noises or zip noises over beats made for easy interactive bars. What set DOOM aside from the rest of them is that he also had advanced producing skills that helped make some of the most unique sounds known to human.

4. MM..FOOD one of the best hip-hop projects produced. From lyrical content, samples, beats, and unique packaging. Mm..food was released through Rhymesayers Ent. (Minneapolis, MN). This limited release came candy wrapped which also included a DVD. Good luck finding this shit!

5. Discography, discography, discography. Thinking about DOOM’s death made me so thankful that he left behind a shit-ton of music. His bars still hold up with modern times. His hate for fake rappers and weed and beer references will shit on most of these new cats. Here are a handful of notable projects.

R.I.P MF DOOM
