Return of Gang Starr

Gangstarr returned with the first single ‘Family and Loyalty’ featuring J. Cole back in September (2019). DJ Premiere at first denied more music to come until recently releasing a second single ‘Bad Name’ as well as announcing an upcoming album release in early November, titled ‘One of the Best Yet'.

Who is Gang Starr?

Gangstar is made up of the classic duo DJ Premier and the late lyricist, Guru. Gang Starr set a standard in Hip-hop that was recognized on a global level. The music was filled with authentic DJ scratching and bars that were full of intellectual insight, while still keeping that Brooklyn, NY underground sound. Keep in mind that this was a pre-internet-dominant era, so blowing up wasn’t as easy as uploading a video accompanied by hashtags.

There are many reasons as to why Gang Starrs' return is important to the current state of Hip-hop. Bringing back the classic sound of boom-bap accompanied with meaningful lyrics is something Hip-hop needs.

Many people have discussed that the new releases don’t capture the original essence due to Guru's passing and that most of the time posthumous albums aren’t up to par, lacking the original vision from the artists themselves. In this case, we have special conditions because DJ Premiere is still alive and well. He also provides and keeps the original-timeless sound.

Hip-hop isn’t just partying, buying expensive cars, and buying that gold chain. This genre lacks content with the exception of a handful of artists that still take the lyrical game seriously.
